Eastern Lane

Module Information

Name: Eastern Lane

Type: Straight Module
Standard: A (64mm)
Dimensions: 115cm x 50cm
Constructed: Spring 2015

Description

Eastern Lane is the first overground module I made after deciding not to just make underground stations. The original idea was to just make a piece of straight track, which goes through a suburb area but Eastern Lane has since evolved into being a turnout module to go after the Hedgehog Avenue station.

An M300 passing by. The grass mat has been carefully painted to give an impression of it turning into grass/soil  mix just before the fence.

Overview of the first pair of turnouts with a Tka 4 work car in the background

Eastern Lane has the metro track go through an area with many spruce trees on both sides with a row of apartment buildings in the background. A road goes parallel to the track and allows car drivers to chase the metro trains.

No entry!

The speed limit for cars...

...and the speed limit for trains

The module's trackage includes a pair of right and left turnouts that allow switching tracks after or before the Hedgehog Avenue station from either side. The yellow signs indicate the beginning of the 80km/h speed limit area as opposed to the 70km/h that is nominal in tunnels.

A view through the woods. Trees are standard ready-made spruce trees from Noch and all ground foliage is a mix of different Woodland Scenics products.

Trackside detailing. The ballast really blends well with C-track and makes it look much more realistic.

More trackside details. Note that in metro tracks, there is no slopes in the ballast like in main line railroads, but the whole fenced track area is more or less flat.

The scenery has been inspired by "Herttoniemi" area in the real-life metro, where one can find a similar setting. Between "Herttoniemi" and "Siilitie" stations the metro track goes right beside a road called "Itäväylä", which literally means "East Lane/Way/Road" etc. So that's where the module's name comes from.

Some shrubs and bushes in the roadside

A small path leads near the track in the woods - a perfect place for spotters..!

A metro track must be totally separated from its surroundings and that is also the case in New Helsinki Metro. Eastern Lane has a fence on both sides of the track area with no-entry warning signs.
